Looking for a great FREE
event for the kids this weekend? NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena
is holding their annual open house. JPL
is the lead U.S. center for robotic exploration of the solar system, and
conducts major programs in space-based Earth sciences and astronomy. So pretty much... your kids will LOVE it!
The open house is on
Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event this
year is titled “Great Journeys,” and will take all visitors on a “ride” through
the wonders of space. Their press
release says that “highlights include a life-size model of Mars Science
Laboratory, the NASA/JPL spacecraft currently bound for Mars; demonstrations
from numerous space missions; JPL’s machine shop, where robotic spacecraft
parts are built; and the Microdevices Lab, where engineers and scientists use
tiny technology to revolutionize space exploration.”
Your afternoon will be
filled with hands-on activities and will provide many opportunities for your
kids (or yourself) to talk with scientists and engineers. And bring your cell phones! They will be
holding a mobile phone scavenger hunt.
They are located at 4800
Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, California, 91109.
Parking and admission are free.
With a house full of little
boys and an engineer husband who has done projects with JPL, this is my family’s
perfect event for weekend fun. I hope to
see all of you there. And don’t forget
to check out Colorado Blvd. afterwards for a little shopping and dining.
P.S. Do you think I can
squeeze one of my kids onto a rocket that is headed to Mars? Maybe if they don’t behave I will check this
out and see if it’s an option. ;)
