San Diego Firehouse Museum

One of the best perks about living in Orange County is that there are so many places we can drive to for a day trip.  If you drive for an hour north of us, you can spend some time exploring Los Angeles, if you drive south you can enjoy some time down in San Diego.  For our family, we found ourselves heading south (much nicer drive) this weekend.

Since my car is filled with a bunch of boys, we ended up spending some time in Little Italy at a great Firehouse Museum.  The museum occupies the space formerly home to San Diego Fire Station #6 and is filled with firefighter memorabilia.  My kids loved the old fire trucks; they had all different generations from a more current Hook & Ladder to an old horse drawn steamer.  Displays filled the walls with helmets, patches, and antique firefighting apparatuses.

The best part of our visit was the person on duty at the museum was an actual Firefighter.  He was more than willing to answer any and all of our questions and even gave the boys some great advice on how they could become Firefighter one day (that idea freaks me out).  We left after having an hour of fun for only $3 (adults are $3 and kids under 12 are free)!

This area of San Diego is walking distance to so many fun activities.  We walked past a huge farmers market (will be going back for this) that was filled with fresh seafood, the tall ships are just a few blocks away, and there were lots of adorable little stores to go shopping in.

So if you ever decide to bust out of our Orange County bubble… head down south and enjoy some fun in San Diego’s sun.
